The fantasy – The Untold story of the rarest Black Orchid that grew in a field of Black Opium plantation, its Classique Intense presence in this dark flower-less Shalimar …
Floral gourmand and chypre oriental scents all with aromatic white flowers and seductively moreish vanilla accrods.
Jean Paul Gaultier Classique Intense
Francis Kurkdjian recreated the original from 1993 into a more modern day interpretation of the Classique, and it was launched in the summer of 2014 as Intense. The bottle captures a man’s fantasy of the female form in all its glory…with pomegranate sweetness that sparkles, fresh white florals make the heart and vanilla in the base just blends this all into a mix that’s liquid seduction.
Wear it on….a date at a fine dine restaurant.
Wear it if…you are a lady who loves satins and silks, and gold accents, and slips and gowns, and love the sun
Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium
Master perfumers Nathalie Lorson and Marie Salamagne, in collaboration with Olivier Cresp and Honorine Blanc, developed the composition. The bottle is rock and roll glammed up to the nines. The sparkles set the tone for a spicy floral core that plays beautifully with vanilla and patchouli. It has a molten quality to it and engulfs you in a cloud of rock chic glam.
Wear it on…a night on the town, when you hit a bar and a club after
Wear it if…you are feeling frisky, and you love your herve leger numbers and your killer heels and leather and studs, and love moonlight
Tom Ford Black Orchid
Black Orchid was created by perfume creators of fragrance company Givaudan in 2006. The bottle plays up its dark opulence and is classically modern. The juice is a sensual gourmand that’s complex and layered and plays up the mystery element so well. Rich chocolate accords, plenty of spices, hints of white florals and intoxicating incense make this fragrance truly rare and awe inspiring.
Wear it on…an opening, when you are the guest of honor or wear it when it’s your big fat wedding with thousands of people around and you want to stand out
Wear it if…you burn as bright as the fire inside of you, if you love reds, plush velvets, and are most awake at night
Elizabeth Arden Untold Absolu
The successful first perfume Untold was succeeded by various interpretations of a woman’s life in the collection created by perfumer Clement Gavarry. Untold Absolu was launched in 2014 and is warmer, fruitier and more floral than the previous. It seems to have aged like wine, with more class and grace, less fire but more style…beautiful fruity opening followed by rich florals that make a beautiful heart, and the smooth creamy tones of vanilla, tonka bean, benzoin all make for an elegant yet stately blend. It is subtle power in a bottle.
Wear it on…a luncheon, while you maintain your unmatched elegance and grace.
Wear it if….you are LADY, who is in control and power, is not offensive, loves white linens and cottons, and the blue sky.
Guerlain Shalimar L’eau
Not much is left to be said about the hugely acclaimed Shalimar, a fragrance first launched in 1921, and now the re-interpretation in 2012, which is further foray in the Shalimar cosmos by perfumer Thierry Wasser. This one tops my list for its lightness and ‘powderiness’ that’s also fresh and spicy all at the same time. Fresh citrus opening, and dry spring bouquet heart with the warmth of vanilaa that just caresses gently….its pure love, that’s ethereal and regral.
Wear it on…the most important moment of your life, so it remains etched in your memory forever along with the scent.
Wear it if….you are an heiress or feel like one, you love everything that’s royal, chattily lace, rose bouquets, chariots, prince charming…and if you love fresh morning air.
“Your fragrance is your message, your scented slogan” said a wise perfumer whose words trigger me to think that your fragrance might be your invisible signature, an impression of your presence, personality or preferences, left on the world around.
Figuratively speaking your scent is like a window that provides a superficial view of you, your tastes, maybe even the type of food you are fond of or the type of music you like.
Knowing or in this context ‘knowledge of oneself’ is reassuring, knowing what works for you helps you be more assertive about how you project onto others. Familiarity and consistency often leads people to place more trust and form positive affiliations with you.
Your olfactive footprint results in you leaving a piece of yourself in the minds of people you meet such that they cannot remember you without at least remembering a hint of what you smell like.
But crowning a scent as your signature is not as daunting a task as you think it is.
Your signature scent fundamentally is a scent that’s most loved by YOU on YOU!
Just start by heading to your favorite departmental store that offers a huge range of fragrances from designer to niche, scour through the beautiful displays and just try, try, try!
Remember do not buy a fragrance right away. Let it sit on your skin through the day and check its performance the next morning, if you can still smell it and it still makes you as happy as it did when the sales exec first sprayed it on your wrist then go ahead and say I do!
Wear your favorite scent often, or often enough such that people smell it whenever they meet you. So pick a scent that’s great on performance, high quality, well rounded, and somewhat unique, and let it garner flattery your way. Read more on most luxurious and powerful scents of the season…
Your signature scent may change seasonally, or yearly, or monthly…capitalize on the new launches or discover an evergreen classic that you absolutely love. Read more on best new launches this season…
Now go ahead and discover your signature scent and make it good because you may leave the room but your scent will remain after.
Above seen is Maharani Gayatri Devi who was the third Maharani consort of Jaipur from 1940 to 1949, known for her unforgettable beauty and style.
Ever wondered why every head in the room turns to look at that one person, radiating with an inner confidence and an outer glow thats unmatched, leaving behind a heady trail as he/she walks by, that upon entering your nostrils triggers a thousand sensors and then you remember or talk about that person for days after…so what makes a person this enchanting?
Well to talk about inner confidence and building an enigmatic persona would have to be a topic from another type of a discussion on another type of a blog, however here I can take care of how to leave behind a trail in your attempt to be unforgettable!
It all starts with figuring out what works for you! Which fragrance rocks your world, floats your boat, or makes you sway…you get the drift right?
I am sure in your lifetime you have had the chance to try as well as wear several different fragrances, but has there been one or a few that stood out in your memory, maybe on yourself or on another person? Why do certain scents remain etched in your memory?
It has a lot to do with the character of a scent.
Modern perfumery has given us many many scents that are unlike anything one has ever had the chance to smell. They are complex and create olfactory or sensory experiences that are only understood by its wearer by relating it to some life event, or a memory or a physical/emotional experience. We all are able to identify and relate to a smell that occurs in nature around us, like the distinct sweet smell of the rose flower or rich smell of sandalwood. However modern perfumers are abundantly using synthetics to create olfactory experiences rather than simply smells, and this is evident in every glistening liquid being sold in every pretty glass bottle that sits on every perfume shelf in every store in the world.
Based on this and based on the fact that today we have access to a huge variety of fragrances, designer and niche, I want to provide some help in terms of how to choose a fragrance that sets you apart in the crowd! So I begin by emphasising on wearing scents that have a distinctive character, make a bold statement, have a refined and complex quality.
Now go work that room and write back to me with your experiences!!
The first bamboo bag by Gucci came out in 1947 and it took over 6 decades to incorporate and reinterpret the signature bamboo design into its olfactory successor -the Gucci Bamboo fragrance for women by one of the most admired fashion labels Gucci. So how is it?
With the first spray I am immediately transported to a fragrant oriental garden, still water pond that glimmers with the reflection of delicate flowers and trees that bend over it...the opening is fresh bergamot that quickly fades to reveal the floral heart of casablanca lily, orange blossom, ylang ylang is faint on my skin. Base is lightly woody with soft sandal tones and vanilla keeping the soft subtle vibe of this sheer fragrance intact. It isn't an olfactive groundbreaker but its softness and the beautiful floralcy is hard for any woman to resist. In my opinion it is a summer scent, perfect for gifting esp to someone close and also to wear to lunch with the ladies.
I was at a dinner party last eve and I could smell Alien Aqua Chic on a woman seated across the table from me almost as vividly as if I was wearing it. So right off the bat I would award this lovely floriental great sillage! It hit the market in 2012 and perfumer Dominique Ropion cleverly let bright sweet freesia play beautifully with juicy spiciness of ginger. Lemon verbana lingers lightly in the background and upon drying down wood and Amber make their presence felt. This lovely interplay stays the same throughout with no surprise notes jumping at you with passage of time. In my opinion, a quintessential feminine floral scent that just spells elegance and premium quality, nothing less can be expected from the Thierry Mugler fragrances.
Florentine Iris by men's wear titan Ermenegildo Zegna holds place in the collaborative collection with Estée Lauder Cos. Inc. called Essenze by Ermenegildo Zegna. It hit the market in Dec 2012. All fragrances in the collection star bergamot which combines with various blends to create the series. Florentine Iris plays up Iris in a most refreshing, unpretentious and classy way. It's not "lipstick" but is pristine almost crystalline which is icy and clean and yet rich. The floral core starts to become slightly soapy for me a few minutes in but that quickly fades to a sweet rounded dry down that is unexpectedly long lasting. Musk is pivotal to this scent as it constitutes the backbone which makes this one very consistent. Personally I would personify this fragrance as colour 'white'. If white was a fragrance this would be it. Complex yet subtle and high quality only downside incredibly unforgiving on the pocket.
